Not All Disasters Are Natural
I’ve been following the horrendous situation in the Bahamas after the impact of Hurricane Dorian. My heart goes out to the people whose lives have been utterly changed … possibly forever.
Natural disasters are often hard to predict and even harder to avoid. You probably have a disaster plan in place for your practice; I do for SmartBox, and I revisit it every so often. It’s good to be as prepared as possible for the unexpected.
Quite recently, some 400 dental practices were hit with a different kind of disaster – a mass ransomware attack that locked them out of their computer systems until they paid the ransom. Arguably, that could mean those businesses had to shell out $50,000 or even more.
They didn’t see that coming.
Now that it’s happened, more dental practices will be taking steps to harden their cybersecurity. That’s something you should do; the next ransomware attack might target your practice, or the dentist down the street, or every dentist in your market.
Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires, cyberattacks – these are events. There’s one other kind of disaster that is a process that culminates in an event … dental practice failure.
I freely admit that I have a soft spot for dentists. My dad’s a dentist, and I count many, many dentists as friends. I want all dentists to succeed. In fact, that’s why I publish this newsletter – so that you and your practice can withstand the slow-motion disasters and thrive.

Fed Up With Being Fed Up
Dr. Kevin McMahon of Edgewood, Kentucky, was fed up with trying to ride herd on different dental marketing providers.
“I did some other internet marketing with other people: Google AdWords and stuff like that,” he said. “It got prohibitively expensive. It was difficult. It was hard to monitor. I didn’t have the follow-up. I got just a little bit frustrated between the internet marketing with Google AdWords, then a different person for the website, and a different person for something else.

“I’m staying busier in times that normally I wouldn’t be busier. I’m being more productive in things that I’m doing. I’m moving toward the larger cases, implants, things like that, and have associates do other work.”’

Dr. Michael Kirchner of Jeffersonville, Indiana, was not happy with his previous marketing companies.
